Make Sure Your Flossing Correctly When Wearing Braces

It's definitely a little trickier than before, but it's also more important than ever. Think of it this way: braces create extra hiding places for food and plaque. So, mastering the art of flossing with braces is a key part of your overall oral care, and it's absolutely essential for effective prevention dentistry. Let's get into the best ways to clean between your teeth!

Why Flossing Matters With Braces

Braces make it easier for food particles and plaque to get trapped around your teeth and gums. Plaque is that sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms in your mouth. If plaque isn’t removed regularly, it can lead to problems like cavities, gum disease (gingivitis), and even white spots (decalcification) on your teeth once your braces are removed. Consistent flossing helps remove this plaque and keeps your gums healthy. Ignoring flossing can result in longer treatment times, more discomfort, and potentially permanent damage to your teeth.

The Right Tools for the Job

While regular floss is great, you might find some other tools helpful when you have braces:

•  Floss Threaders: These are like little plastic needles that help you guide the floss under your archwire and between your teeth.
•  Interdental Brushes (Proxy Brushes): These small, cone-shaped brushes are excellent for cleaning around brackets and between teeth.
•  Water Flossers: These devices use a stream of water to flush out food particles and plaque. They can be a good addition to your routine, but they shouldn’t replace traditional flossing entirely.

Step-by-Step Flossing Guide

1~ Thread the Floss: If you're using regular floss, thread it through a floss threader.
2~ Position the Floss: Gently guide the floss threader (with the floss attached) under the archwire and between two teeth.
3~ Floss Carefully: Remove the floss threader. Wrap the floss around each tooth in a "C" shape, making sure to go slightly under the gum line. Gently move the floss up and down, removing plaque and food debris.
4~ Repeat: Repeat this process for each tooth, using a clean section of floss each time.
5~ Use Interdental Brushes: After flossing, use an interdental brush to clean around the brackets. Gently insert the brush between the wire and your teeth, and between each bracket.
6~ Rinse Thoroughly: After flossing and using interdental brushes, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or mouthwash.

Tips for Success

•  Be Patient: Flossing with braces takes practice. Don't get discouraged if it feels awkward at first.
•  Be Gentle: Avoid snapping the floss against your gums. This can cause irritation and bleeding.
•  Don't Skip Teeth: Make sure you floss between every tooth, even the ones in the back that are harder to reach.
•  Floss Regularly: Aim to floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.
•  Ask for Help: If you’re struggling with flossing, don't hesitate to ask your orthodontist or dental hygienist for a demonstration. They can provide personalized tips and techniques.

Taking the time to floss correctly with braces is a commitment to your oral care and a crucial step in prevention dentistry that ensures a healthy and beautiful smile after your braces come off. With a little patience and the right tools, you can easily incorporate flossing into your daily routine.
