Orthodontic FAQs

Smiling girl with bracesAt Raleigh Family Orthodontics, we believe that patient education is the foundation of good oral health. The following information is designed to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

What Is the Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?

A general dentist does not specialize in any one particular area of dentistry. They are usually concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of dental problems. Most visits to a general dentist consist of a routine check-up, professional cleaning and dental restorations.

An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in straightening your teeth and correcting malocclusions (misaligned bites). As orthodontists, Dr. Neill & Dr. Lee have undergone years of additional education to ensure the safety and success of your treatment.

What Is the Best Age to Begin Orthodontic Treatment?

Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. While both children and adults can benefit from orthodontics, children typically have the most to gain. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial consultation around seven years of age.

Who Needs Orthodontic Treatment?

During your initial consultation, we will be able to determine if you or your child needs orthodontic treatment. Misaligned teeth can result in many secondary complications. We typically recommend orthodontic treatment to correct:
•  Crowded teeth
•  Protruding upper or lower teeth
•  Crooked teeth
•  Gapped teeth
•  Malocclusions (overbites, underbites, open bites, cross bites)

Why Is Orthodontic Treatment Important?

An attractive smile can do wonders for your self-confidence. Crowded or crooked teeth can also be much more difficult to clean. These areas may eventually experience gum disease and tooth decay. These problems can affect the aesthetics of your smile and jeopardize your oral and bodily health.

Many problems that require orthodontics will eventually worsen without treatment. This is why it is important for children to see an orthodontist before major complications occur. Teeth are also easier to move during the development phase.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

The length of orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient. For instance, braces can be worn as little as six months or as long as three years. The average length of treatment with braces is about 18-24 months.

The actual length of treatment is dictated by which problems need correcting and the severity of those problems. Once your treatment is complete, it is important to protect your investment. Wearing a retainer after your treatment is a necessity. Even after orthodontics, your teeth will continue to shift back to their original position, undoing all your hard work. A retainer is a simple and effective way to keep your teeth straight for a lifetime.
