Tips For Adults Wearing Braces

More and more adults are choosing orthodontic treatment to improve their smiles and overall oral health. While braces might seem like a teen thing, they can be incredibly effective for adults too. To make your journey with braces as smooth as possible, here are some helpful tips.

Oral Hygiene is Key

Braces create extra nooks and crannies where food particles can hide, increasing your risk of cavities and gum disease. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial. Brush your teeth at least three times a day, especially after meals. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Pay close attention to brushing around the brackets and wires.

Flossing is also essential. It can be tricky with braces, but special floss threaders or interdental brushes can help you get between your teeth and under the wires. Consider using a water flosser to dislodge food particles and plaque in hard-to-reach areas.

Watch What You Eat

Certain foods can damage your braces or get stuck in them. Avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods like caramel, hard candy, nuts, and popcorn. Cut hard fruits and vegetables into small pieces. Be careful when eating foods that require a lot of biting, like corn on the cob or apples. It's best to cut these off the cob or into slices.

Also, sugary drinks and snacks can contribute to plaque buildup and cavities. Limit your intake of these items and always brush your teeth afterward.

Manage Discomfort

It's normal to experience some discomfort when you first get your braces or after adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any soreness. You can also rinse your mouth with warm salt water to soothe irritated gums.

Orthodontic wax is your best friend! Apply a small amount of wax to any brackets or wires that are rubbing against your cheeks or lips. This creates a barrier and prevents irritation. Don't hesitate to contact your orthodontist if you experience severe or persistent pain.

Keep Your Appointments

Regular check-up appointments are essential for tracking your progress and making adjustments to your braces. Missing appointments can prolong your treatment time. Be sure to schedule your appointments in advance and arrive on time. If you need to reschedule, notify your orthodontist's office as soon as possible.

Protect Your Mouth

If you participate in sports or other activities where there's a risk of impact to your mouth, wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can protect your teeth and braces from damage. You can purchase a mouthguard at most sporting goods stores or ask your orthodontist about a custom-fitted mouthguard.

Be Patient

Orthodontic treatment takes time. The length of treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case. It's important to be patient and follow your orthodontist's instructions. Remember that the end result – a beautiful, healthy smile – is worth the effort.
