Which Types of Devices Can Correct a Bite Aside from Braces and Aligners?

Posted on 6/1/2026 by Raleigh Family Orthodontics
During a consultation appointment, a patient asks his orthodontist questions while she uses a dental model to explain his orthodontic options.Braces and aligners are popular options for correcting bite issues, but they're not the only ones. Several other devices can effectively address various bite problems, offering alternative solutions for patients who may not be comfortable with traditional methods.

Here's a closer look at some of these alternative devices:

Headgear: This device is typically used to correct an overbite, where the upper front teeth protrude significantly beyond the lower front teeth. Headgear consists of a metal frame that fits around the head and is connected to a facial bow that rests against the chin. Elastics are then attached to the facial bow and the upper back teeth, applying gentle pressure to move the upper teeth backward.

Palatal Expander: This device is used to widen the upper jaw, creating more space for crowded teeth. It consists of a plastic plate that fits onto the roof of the mouth and has an expanding screw in the middle. By turning the screw, the palate expands gradually, making room for proper tooth alignment.

Lip and Cheek Bumpers: These small, rubbery devices are used to discourage habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, which can contribute to bite problems. They are typically placed inside the mouth, on the lips or cheeks, and provide a physical barrier to prevent these habits.

Retainers: While primarily used to maintain the results of orthodontic treatment after braces or aligners are removed, retainers can also be used to address minor bite issues. They are removable appliances that hold the teeth in their corrected positions and prevent them from shifting back.

Elastics: These small rubber bands are used to apply additional pressure to specific teeth, correcting bite problems such as crossbites or open bites. They are typically worn between the upper and lower teeth, and come in various strengths and configurations depending on the individual needs.

Surgical Intervention: In some cases, severe bite problems may require surgical intervention to achieve the desired correction. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons can perform procedures to reposition the jaw bones, correct skeletal discrepancies, and address underlying structural issues contributing to the bite problem.

While braces and aligners remain popular choices for bite correction, these alternative devices offer effective solutions for a variety of bite issues. It's important to consult with an experienced orthodontist to determine the best treatment option based on your individual needs and preferences. They will assess your bite, discuss your concerns, and recommend the most suitable approach for achieving a healthy and beautiful smile.
