Tips for Maintaining Oral Hygiene With Braces

Posted on 11/15/2024 by Raleigh Family Orthodontics

This raises your risk for cavities, gum disease, and permanent white spots on your teeth. However, you can keep your mouth healthy with good oral hygiene. Here are tips to make the process easier.

Brush Carefully

Take extra time when brushing. Make sure to brush above and below each bracket and where the wires connect to your teeth. An orthodontic toothbrush with extra-soft bristles can help clean hard-to-reach areas. Brushing after each meal will keep your teeth plaque-free.

Floss Thoroughly

Floss at least once per day. Use orthodontic floss threaders to get the floss under and around each bracket. Flossing removes plaque and food particles that your toothbrush cannot reach. Ask your orthodontist to show you the best flossing method for your braces.

Rinse After Eating

Swish vigorously with an antibacterial mouthwash after eating. Mouthwash reaches spots a toothbrush cannot. Rinsing keeps your mouth clean in between brushing and flossing. Pick a mouthwash without alcohol so it does not irritate your gums.

Watch What You Eat

Avoid sticky and hard foods that can damage your braces. Foods like caramel, chewing gum, nuts, seeds, and hard candies can bend wires and break brackets. Eat more crunchy fruits and vegetables that help clean your teeth naturally.

See Your Dentist Regularly

It is essential to get your teeth professionally cleaned every 3 to 6 months. This removes tartar buildup and plaque that you cannot remove at home. Additionally, your dentist can spot issues early and thoroughly clean your teeth.

Schedule a Consultation

Good oral hygiene takes some extra work with braces. But taking care of your teeth now means you will have a healthy, beautiful smile when your braces come off. See our orthodontist if you have any questions or concerns.
