Orthodontic Treatment Considerations for Patients With Dental Anomalies
Posted on 9/2/2024 by Raleigh Family Orthodontics
While orthodontic treatment aims to correct misaligned teeth and bites, certain inborn dental irregularities can pose unique challenges. Our orthodontist will give special consideration to these irregularities when straightening your smile.
Supernumerary Teeth
Extra nonfunctional teeth sometimes develop alongside or amid the usual set. These supplemental or supernumerary teeth often impede the eruption or alignment of normal teeth. Orthodontics may incorporate surgical access for connecting braces to impacted teeth or removing obstructions before repositioning teeth.
Hypodontia
In hypodontia, people lack multiple permanent teeth, excluding wisdom teeth. The vacant spaces left by missing teeth allow the remaining teeth to drift and rotate into misalignment over time. Closing gaps to establish alignment requires careful planning around altered mechanics and spacing issues. This may incorporate tooth-colored bonding, bridges, or implants placed after braces treatment finishes.
Dense Bone Structure
Occasionally, an unusually solid jawbone density offers little flexibility for tooth movement. This biologically rigid bone can sometimes limit the repositioning ability of orthodontic forces. Customized use of expansion and functional appliances, alongside braces, may help overcome extreme density for difficult movements.
Cleft Lip and Palate
A cleft lip and/or palate happens when facial structures fail to fuse during embryonic development. The resulting gap or opening can displace teeth abnormally. Beyond negatively impacting speech and eating, misaligned teeth affect social confidence. Yet with coordinated surgical repair of the cleft often performed during infancy, followed by phase-timed orthodontic treatment between ages 8-12, even severe malocclusion can improve greatly. Later phase treatment after full jaw growth may further align the bite.
Amelogenesis Imperfecta
This genetic condition hinders proper enamel formation, causing deficiencies that weaken tooth structure. The resulting yellowish, pitted appearance often prompts patients to seek veneers or crowns once growth finishes. But with orthodontic realignment beforehand, restorations can resolve functional bite issues. After aligning underlying tooth positions, we can develop a restorative treatment plan.
