Orthodontic Problems Explained

Recognizing these problems early on is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. Below are some of the most frequently observed orthodontic problems:

Crowding

Crowding occurs when there is not enough space in the mouth for all permanent teeth to emerge correctly. This can result in teeth becoming misaligned, making them challenging to clean. Crowding also raises the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease.

Spacing

Gaps between teeth, known as spacing, may arise due to excessive distance between them. This condition can be attributed to either missing teeth or teeth that are undersized. The result is a visually uneven and spaced-out appearance of the teeth.

Abnormal Eruption

Irregular tooth eruption occurs when a tooth emerges from the gum in an improper position. In cases where the tooth is hindered from fully growing, a minor oral surgical procedure might be necessary to uncover the tooth before commencing orthodontic treatment.

Overbite

An overbite is characterized by the upper front teeth protruding excessively over the lower front teeth. This condition may hinder proper biting and chewing, potentially resulting in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.

Underbite

An underbite presents the converse of an overbite, where the lower front teeth extend excessively beyond the upper front teeth. This can also make it difficult to bite and chew properly, leading to TMJ problems.

Open Bite

An open bite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth fail to meet when the mouth is closed, leaving a noticeable gap. This condition can result from habits like thumb-sucking. An open bite may lead to challenges in speaking and eating with ease.

Early detection and positive intervention not only enhance the aesthetics of a smile but also contribute to improved overall well-being. If you or your loved ones have concerns about your bite or the alignment of your teeth, do not hesitate to consult our qualified orthodontic specialist for guidance.
